Hydro successfully tested as efficient energy management tool

Hydro, the streamflow forecast system developed by Stalab together with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, has provided Endesa, leading utility in the Spanish electricity system and the number one private electricity company in Latin America, with highly competitive streamflow predictions during a pilot exercise in the Andes Mountains of south central Chile.

Hydro, that received Endesa's NOVARE Prize in Energy Efficiency in 2007, is based on a new hydrological model that assimilates physical observations, among them snow data captured by EO satellites and water level data measured by GNSS-R. Additionally, the outcome is adapted to the operational regime of the Interconnected Central System by providing predictions at specific points of interest, these are representative flow values on a sub-basin level. Hydro's forecasting outcomes seem to be especially useful during off-median climate seasons.
