JS2019030801 –Senior Project Manager

Starlab, a private R&D company based in Barcelona (Spain) and Oxford (UK) is looking for a senior profile with a very proactive attitude to join our team.

The successful candidate will work at the forefront of Earth Observation projects with a focus on bringing research results to real-world applications. The projects fall into basically two areas: agriculture and urban.

Our focus now is to integrate AI into EO and strengthen data analytics for to improve the impact in industry and society. We provide advanced Earth Observation solutions by providing easy access to complex data while leveraging Machine Learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage key projects for the unit (H2020, ESA)
  • Overview projects, associated resources, planning, and issues raising
  • Ensure/coordinate/support consulting efficiency
  • Reporting, link to management
  • Lead proposal writing for H2020 and ESA
  • Assist to conferences and meetings to foster proposal participation

Detailed tasks

  • Supervise all projects execution for institutional market. That means having a constant overall monitoring of progress, deadlines, and outputs. Roles of complying with the project activities and deadlines remains to Project Managers.
  • Supervise human resources for projects, in particular, planning of overlapping tasks, priorities, unoccupied collaborators
  • Solve conflicts, issues raising from projects.
  • Suggest efficiency improvements to Project Managers
  • Attribute resources to tasks when not obvious
  • Anticipate overloaded periods and report to management.
  • Support Project Managers in their daily activities if necessary.
  • Ensure good practices in Project management (meeting, documentation, scheduling, reporting, review, internal/external communication).
  • Report back to management of progresses and issues.
  • BD for proposal writing / idea generation / resources alignment

Requirements:

• BSc. or MSc.: preferably in the fields of mathematics, physics, computer science or engineering
• Proactive, highly-organised & dynamic
• Ability to handle projects with a “multi-scale” approach, able to maintain a high- level view while paying attention to detail,
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills
• Fluent in English and ideally also Spanish (spoken and written),
• Team player and entrepreneurial spirit
• Experience in Earth Observation market
• Experience in integration of several data sources (open data, crowd sourced data, satellite data, models, in situ)
• Experience in ESA projects, World bank, H2020, FP7 or similar.

JS2018041301 – Project Support Engineer

The successful candidate will work at the forefront of Earth Observation projects with a focus on bringing research results to real-world applications. The projects fall into basically two areas: agriculture and urban.

Responsibilities:

To undertake specific tasks on identified projects, under the supervision of a Project Manager, including:

• Completing relevant project documentation, ie. Reports for different projects for ESA and the Commission and other institutions or private clients
• Participating in project meetings
• Composes, revises and edits a variety of routine to moderately difficult, reports, data, proposals, technical charts or agreements ranging from routine to complex
• Coordinating the consultation process with all stakeholders and manage clients’ expectations.
• Assist in the preparation and distribution of materials and stationery required for events
• Performs data analyses and comparisons; develops and maintains spreadsheets to facilitate data interpretation and manipulation
• Working as part of a team: cooperatively with others toward accomplishment of a shared goal as opposed to working separately or competitively
• Reinforces the team concept through all actions

Project support engineers provide vital assistance to project managers. Every project is different and therefore the duties will change accordingly.
As a project support staff the responsibilities will be inextricably tied to the success of the projects you are working on. Driving everything forward from planning to implementation, your actions will directly influence the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the project.

Requirements:

JS2018040301 – Internship Software Engineer

Starlab, a private R&D company based in Barcelona (Spain) and Oxford (UK) is looking for an exceptional software engineer with a very hands-on attitude to join our team. The successful candidate will work at the forefront of earth observation and neuroscience research projects with a focus on bringing research results to real-world applications.
We provide advanced solutions integrating earth observation augmented services and machine learning to create new products able to be integrated in the decision chain for more competitive and sustainable operations. We turn complex data into useful information. We also believe we are driving a revolution in how we measure and modulate the activity of our electrical brains, which will have a massive impact on health, wellness, human computer interaction and society.
The responsibilities of the successful candidate as a member of the Starlab Software team include to deliver polished and functional software to both Earth observation and Neuroscience departments. In this process, she or he might be involved in defining key technical requirements from user needs, providing accurate design solutions, building code according to design specifications and providing validation plans to fully test the candidate software solutions or some parts of them.

The following are key requirements we expect the successful candidate to meet:
• BSc. or MSc.: Computer Science or related,
• ability to handle projects with a “multi-scale” approach, able to maintain a high- level view while paying attention to detail,
• very hands-on approach and able to hit the ground running,
• excellent communication and presentation skills,
• fluent in English (spoken and written),
• team player, our culture is very important to us,
• curiosity, things change and we need to adapt, and
• entrepreneurial spirit (we are a company!).

And for the technical skills:
• Python is our most common language.
• Knowledge in web technologies and concretely Javascript and visualisation libraries will help us to build our front-end solutions.
• Web API design.
• Experience with database design and administration will be needed when working on scalable back-ends.
• Knowing C is always welcome.
